NCCDF One of New Youth Philanthropy Council’s 2023-2024 Grant Recipients
We are pleased to be one of two recipients of a grant provided by a new Youth Philanthropy Council in Nelson County. Thanks to Dakota Justus, a recent senior at Nelson County High School, a new philanthropy club has been formed that is allowing students to give back to their community: a new Youth Philanthropy Council—one of multiple in the region.
With what began as his senior project, Justus formed the club also with help from the Nelson County Community Fund and some peers. After an educational process of learning about philanthropy and local non-profits, the YPC presented applications for ta grant which had two recipients this year. The Nelson YPC was given $15,000 to use in their donations. In the end, they only ended up using $12,000, giving $6,000 each to two nonprofits: The Bridge Ministry and the Nelson County Community Development Foundation. They saved the remaining $3,000 to use in the future. Justus was surprised they were even given that large of an amount of money at all.
Executive Director, Margaret Clair said, “We’re hoping to be able to flip existing housing that needs to be rehabbed for sale to people who live or work in Nelson County. And that would include kids coming back.”
This is a great help for NCCDF and others in helping provide affordable housing in Nelson County.
