VHDA was created in 1972 by the General Assembly to help Virginians attain quality, affordable housing. We carry out this mission by working in public-private partnerships with local governments, community service organizations, lenders, Realtors, developers and many others. We provide mortgages for first-time homebuyers, as well as financing for apartment communities and neighborhood revitalization efforts.
Planning District Commissions (PDCs) were established by the General Assembly under the Virginia Area Development Act (Code of Virginia, Title 15.2, 2210). The Thomas Jefferson PDC (10) was formed in 1972 to provide a forum for discussion of issues localities have in common, or on which there is disagreement; to work to decrease fragmentation in government; to plan cooperatively for the future; and to provide planning services to local governments as requested. As a public body, the TJPDC strives to include the public in decision-making.
The Amherst County Department of Social Services provides social work services, financial services, and volunteer opportunities administered according to state and federal regulations. The Social Services Board monitors the formulation and implementation of social welfare programs and makes recommendations on policy matters concerning the Department of Social Services.
The Department of Social Services is to help the citizens of Nelson County achieve a realistic and attainable level of self-sufficiency within a safe, healthy environment. We will accomplish this by using our strengths and resources in a caring, professional manner, while providing a network of protection, support, and temporary financial assistance.
HUD is advancing economic opportunity for low-income families through responsible homeownership, workforce training, educational advancement, and health and wellness programs and services.
